Aubrey Dameron, a 25-year-old transgender woman and proud member of the Cherokee Nation, disappeared under suspicious circumstances on March 9, 2019, in Grove, Oklahoma. Identifying as Two-Spirit—a sacred and culturally significant identity in many Indigenous communities—Aubrey was known for her compassion and resilience.
She had recently returned to Oklahoma after leaving an abusive relationship in New Mexico. In the early morning hours of her disappearance, she left her mother's home on foot, dressed in black, without her purse or epilepsy medication, after reportedly messaging friends for a ride. Her phone last pinged nearby at 3:42 a.m. Despite her family's immediate concern, local authorities were slow to act, and the case was not initially treated as suspicious.
Over the years, her aunt Pam Smith and uncle Christian Fencer led tireless search efforts, often facing institutional indifference. In February 2025, nearly six years later, Aubrey's remains were discovered in rural Ottawa County and confirmed by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office.
